What it does
Helps hemoglobin carry oxygen and supports many cellular processes.
Possible deficiency symptoms
Iron deficiency can cause fatigue, weakness, reduced exercise tolerance and, sometimes, cravings for nonfood substances.
Food sources
Meat; seafood; lentils; beans; iron-fortified cereals. Vitamin C helps absorption of plant iron.
Supplement forms
Ferrous sulfate, fumarate and bisglycinate are examples. Compare elemental iron on the label.
Before taking a supplement
Confirm the reason for low iron and assess blood loss when relevant. HFE-related iron overload requires different care. Keep iron away from children.
