Hormones: questions before a protocol

Make hormone conversations easier to follow.

Updated September 17, 2026 · Educational reference

Start with the question

Hormones are chemical signals. Symptoms, life stage, medicines and timing can all affect which tests are useful and how results should be interpreted.

Timing and feedback matter

Some hormones vary across the day or menstrual cycle. A single measurement may not answer the question you came in with.

Bring a complete list

Bring prescriptions, supplements, cycle information when relevant, and the original results. Biotin can interfere with certain lab tests.

Ask about the plan

Ask what a treatment is intended to change, its risks, alternatives and monitoring. Internal preferred targets are not universal laboratory normal ranges.
